Having lived in Papua New Guinea and Fiji, Grey moved to Queensland at the age of 13, where he found his way to the Queensland Reds extended training squad.
He played two games for Queensland against France in 1997, performances which saw him get offered a full contract with the New South Wales Waratahs, where he would play 94 Super games between 1998 and 2005.
In the international scene, Grey played his first Test for Australia in 1998, coming off the bench and scoring a try against Scotland.
2005 saw Grey take his skills to Japan, where he signed for Kyuden Voltex, helping them achieve promotion to the Top League for the 2007-8 season.
At the age of 35, Grey switched to coaching, landing a role as defense coach of the Melbourne Rebels in 2010, eventually getting promoted to Assistant Coach in preparation for the 2012 Super Rugby season.
Grey held the position until 2013, and was brought back to the Waratahs coaching staff by then head coach Michael Cheika.
He helped guide the Waratahs to their first ever Super Rugby title in 2014, which caught the eyes of the ARU, signing him into the Wallabies coaching team while also coaching at the Waratahs.
In June 2017, the 35-Test centre was confirmed to have signed a full-time deal as national assistant coach on a new two-year contract with the Wallabies.
