Brett Hodgson was born on February 12, 1978, in Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia. He grew up with a passion for rugby league and began his junior career at the Ingleburn RSL Junior Rugby League Club.
Hodgson made his first-grade debut in 1997 for the Western Suburbs Magpies in the Australian Rugby League (ARL) competition. He initially played as a winger but quickly showcased his versatility by also playing at halfback and fullback positions. His speed, agility, and excellent kicking ability caught the attention of fans and coaches alike.
In 2000, Hodgson joined the Parramatta Eels in the National Rugby League (NRL). He had a successful season, representing the New South Wales City Origin team and helping the Eels reach the NRL Grand Final, although they were defeated by the Newcastle Knights. In 2004, Hodgson transferred to the newly formed Wests Tigers, where he played a key role in the team's success. As the club's fullback and goal-kicker, he was an instrumental part of the Tigers' historic premiership-winning campaign in 2005. Hodgson's exceptional performances throughout the season earned him numerous accolades, including the Dally M Fullback of the Year award and being the NRL's leading point-scorer.
Following his success with the Tigers, Hodgson made a move to the Super League in the UK. He signed with the Huddersfield Giants in 2009 and immediately made an impact. Hodgson's outstanding performances at fullback earned him the prestigious Man of Steel Award, which recognizes the best player in the Super League. In 2011, Hodgson joined the Warrington Wolves, another prominent Super League club. He continued to showcase his versatility and leadership skills as the team's fullback and captain. Hodgson played a pivotal role in Warrington's success, winning the Challenge Cup and being named the Lance Todd Trophy winner for his outstanding performance in the final.
After retiring as a player, Hodgson transitioned into coaching roles. He gained experience as a coaching consultant for Hull F.C. and Widnes Vikings, where he shared his knowledge and expertise with young players. In 2018, he returned to the Wests Tigers as an assistant coach and head coach of the Western Suburbs Magpies.
In November 2020, Hodgson was appointed as the head coach of Hull F.C., where he had previously served as a coaching consultant. His tenure as head coach showcased his strategic thinking, dedication, and ability to lead a team. While the team faced challenges during his time as head coach, Hodgson's passion for the game and commitment to developing young talent were evident.
In 2023, Hodgson joined Eddie Jones' coaching team with the Wallabies, the Australian national rugby union team, as a defensive coach. His wealth of experience in both codes of rugby and his expertise in defense make him a valuable addition to the coaching staff.
