While attending Paarl's Boys' High School, Ackerman played for the school's first team in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, he became part of the Western Province side that played at the Under-18 Academy Week tournament, scoring a try in their final match.
His first class debut came during the 2014 Vodacom Cup competition where he made one appearance, coming on as a substitute for Western Province.
He was named in their Currie Cup squad for the 2014 Currie Cup Premier Division and was named on the bench for the first time in their Round Ten match against the Natal Sharks.
In 2015, Ackerman was contracted by the Golden Lions for that year. He has been included in the 2017 Lions Super Rugby squad and has made 8 appearances before in the competition.
In December 2017, Ackerman answered an SOS call from Vern Cotter to sign as a medical joker for Montpellier.
