Alistair Fernando Vermaak, born on 28 April 1989, is a South African professional rugby player known for his powerful presence as a loosehead prop. He currently represents the Stormers in Super Rugby and Western Province in the Currie Cup and Rugby Challenge.
Vermaak's rugby journey began at a young age, playing for Eastern Province in the 2005 Under-16 Grant Khomo Week. He later joined Griffons and showcased his skills at the Under-18 Academy Week in 2006 and the Craven Week in 2007. Vermaak continued his development by representing Griffons U19 in the 2007 Under-19 Provincial Championship.
In 2008, Vermaak moved to Cape Town to join Western Province. He played for their U19 team in the Provincial Championship of that year and later featured in the 2010 Under-21 Provincial Championship.
Vermaak's senior career kicked off in 2011 when he was included in the Western Province squad for the Vodacom Cup competition. He made his first-class debut as a substitute in a match against the Welwitschias, scoring a try within a minute of coming on. Vermaak made a total of five appearances in the competition that year. He also had another appearance in the 2012 Vodacom Cup.
The following year, Vermaak made his Currie Cup debut for Western Province against the Blue Bulls, marking his entry into the premier domestic competition. In 2014, he gained further experience in the Vodacom Cup and earned a place in the Stormers' squad for the Super Rugby season, being named on the bench for their match against the Bulls.
Vermaak had a brief loan spell at the Boland Cavaliers during the 2013 Vodacom Cup, making three appearances for the team. Additionally, he showcased his talent in the Varsity Cup competition while representing the Maties in 2011, 2012, and 2013.
Known for his hard work and no-nonsense approach to the game, Vermaak has proven himself as a reliable and committed player. With a growing number of Super Rugby caps to his name, he aims to continue making a significant impact as part of the Stormers' formidable front row. Vermaak's contributions have also played a role in Western Province's success, including their triumph in the Currie Cup.
