Peter Russell

Russell started his coaching career with a head coach role for the Hawke’s Bay Magpies and lead them to the playoffs four times in five years.

He was promoted to assistant coach of the Highlanders in 2010, but his success at provincial level continued.

In the first year of the two-division Mitre 10 Cup structure in 2011, Russell coached the Magpies to the inaugural Championship Division title, beating Manawatu in the final.

He moved to England in 2012, taking on the head coaching role of the Newcastle Falcons and leading the club back to the top flight of English rugby in his first season by winning the RFU Championship.

He coached the Falcons for two years.

In 2016, Russell moved to Japan where he coached the NEC Green Rockets.

In 2019, he was named head coach of Manawatu on a three-year deal.
