Stewart to captain Ulster against Cardiff
- 86
Head Coach, Richie Murphy, has named his Ulster team to face Cardiff Rugby this Saturday in Round 2 of the EPCR Challenge Cup at Cardiff Arms Park (KO: 8pm).
Tom Stewart captains the province for the first time, leading a refreshed matchday squad as Ulster look to build on their emphatic Round 1 victory over Racing 92.
In the pack, Callum Reid and Tom O’Toole join Stewart to form the front row, with O’Toole set for his 129th appearance. Harry Sheridan and Charlie Irvine continue their partnership in the second row after Irvine impressed with back-to-back strong outings.
The back row sees David McCann start at blindside, with the tireless Sean Reffell named at openside, and powerful young number eight Bryn Ward completing the trio in what promises to be a dynamic and abrasive unit.
At half-back, Conor McKee earns the No. 9 jersey after his composed showing from the bench last week, partnering Jake Flannery, who starts at fly-half.
The midfield sees Ben Carson come into the starting XV at inside centre to join experienced outside centre James Hume, now set for his 105th appearance in Ulster colours.
In the back three, Zac Ward continues on the left wing, Werner Kok provides power and punch on the right, and Stewart Moore starts at full-back.
On the bench, John Andrew provides experienced cover at hooker, while Wallaby Angus Bell continues his integration into the squad and is named among the replacements. Rory McGuire also features as tighthead cover.
There is athletic second-row depth in Cormac Izuchukwu, with Juarno Augustus primed to make an impact from the bench following his impressive recent performances.
In the backs, Ulster are bolstered by the experience of David Shanahan, the creativity of James Humphreys, and the potential debut for full-back Bradley McNamara.
