Nicknamed Trapz, Asafo Aumua has been tipped as the new Keven Mealamu, the young hooker is talented player with the ball in hand, has an excellent work rate and a no-nonsense approach to defence.
From St Patrick's College, Silverstream he was called into the 2014 New Zealand Secondary Schools training squad, as a late call up.
He represented New Zealand in the 2016 World Rugby Under 20 Championship.
His performances at the World Rugby Under 20 Championship lead to a call up to the Wellington Lions Mitre 10 Cup side. He burst onto the provincial scene with a hattrick of tries on debut against Northland in 2016 and 9 other appearances during his first season.
The 108kg flying barrel went on to represent the Baby Blacks again in the 2017 World Championships, where he scored a hat-trick in the final against England.
He was part of the Hurricanes wider squad for the 2017 Super Rugby season but was unable to make his debut.
Aumua had fantastic 2017 Mitre 10 Cup season scoring 7 tries as Wellington made their way to the Championship final of the Mitre 10 Cup.
Aumua was then named as one of four uncapped players in the All Blacks end of year tour squad. He has been a national championship sensation, although he is yet to play at Super Rugby level.
He made two appearances for the All Blacks, debuting against the Barbarians, neither of which were Test matches.
Aumua was then named in the Hurricanes 2018 Super Rugby squad and went on to feature in four matches before his season was cut short because of injury.
In January 2019, he signed a new deal with Hurricanes until at least the end of the 2021 Super Rugby season and in July 2019 he was included in the All Black squad ahead of the Rugby Championship
