Born in Citrusdal, Nicolaas 'Stokkies' Hanekom embraced his rugby talent at junior level across the Western Cape. He was selected for the Western Province U19 squad and went on to represent South Africa at the Junior World Championships in 2009.
Hanekom moved to Eagles for the 2012 Currie Cup First Division season, starting all fourteen games that season. At the start of 2013, he joined the Lions and was included in their squad for the 2013 Lions Challenge Series, as well as the Golden Lions' 2013 Vodacom Cup squad.
