Weekend Round Up

After an entertaining weekend of Rugby, we take a look at the best moments from the opening round of Major League Rugby to the Jaguares claiming their first win in Canberra to Leinster and Racing reaching the Champions Cup final.

Friday 

The weekend's action kicked off with a New Zealand Super Rugby derby between the Blues and Highlanders. The Blues had over 70% possession and territory but still found themselves on the wrong end of the result losing 16-34.




The Lions then faced the Waratahs in Sydney and last year's finalist put in a magnificent performance that saw them claim a 0-29 victory over the Waratahs.


In the last match on Friday Gloucester secured their place in the Challenge Cup final with a comprehensive 33-12 victory over Newcastle Falcons.

Saturday 

The Crusaders and Chiefs picked up victories in the first two games on Saturday beating the Sunwolves and Reds respectfully. Watch all Super Rugby highlights HERE

The win for the Chiefs saw Liam Messam become the first non-Crusader to win 100 Super Rugby matches.

Cardiff Blues put in a gritty defensive performance to secure their place in the Challenge Cup final against Gloucester beating a fired up Pau side 16-10.

Back to Super Rugby, the Bulls put in a stellar performance to beat the Rebels 28-10 at Loftus. The bonus point victory saw John Mitchell's men move into second place in the South African conference. 

Mont-de-Marsan edged Beziers out in a thrilling ProD2 Barrage clash with former securing a semi-final against Perpignan.

Scott Fardy starred for Leinster as the Irish side were the first side to book a spot in the Champions Cup final in Bilbao with a comprehensive 38-16 over Scarlets.

The Sharks claimed an important victory over the Stormers in a South African coastal derby in Super Rugby with man of the match Thomas du Toit scoring the Try of the Weekend, which was the decisive try.

Zebre claimed a 37-14 victory over Ospreys in one of two Pro14 clashes this weekend, while Ulster got their 12th victory of the season beating Glasgow Warriors 36-15.

The Major League Rugby season kicked off later that evening with Nola Gold becoming the first side to claim a victory beating Houston Sabercats 26-35. 

Glendale Raptors were able to beat Austin Elite in the second Major League Rugby clash despite finishing the game with only 12 men on the pitch after Ben Landry and Connor Cook where shown red cards, while Kelepi Fifita was shown a yellow card late on for multiple offside offences. Full Time 41-26.

Sunday 


The Brumbies and Jaguares faced off in the final Super Rugby match of the weekend. There were a number of firsts in this clash with Henry Speight becoming the first Fijian born player to reach 100 Super Rugby caps, while the Jaguares became the first side to beat the Brumbies in Canberra in their first clash at the venue. 

Racing 92 raced into an early 24-3 lead in the first 25 minutes of their Champions Cup semi-final against Munster with a spot in the final in Bilbao on the line.

Munster fought back in the second half but in the end it was the Paris based side that confirmed their spot in the final where they will face Leinster.

The final clash of the weekend was a Major League clash between the Seattle Seawolves and San Diego Legion.

Seawolves' dominated in the scrum which earned them 3 penalty tries, while Legion's backs look dangerous on attack but they ultimately lost the match up front. Full time Seawolves 39-23 Legion.
