England fought tooth and nail to beat Wales narrowly in a World Cup warm up full of incident, injury and yellow cards and notably, a red card for captain Owen Farrell that could see him face a six-week suspension, which could rule him out for their opening game of the World cup in France next month.

England led 6-0 at halftime through two Farrell penalties but a dull game at Twickenhan then burst into life in the second half.

Wales were awarded a penalty try after a tackle in the air that saw Freddie Steward yellow-carded and England were soon down to 13 men with Ellis Genge and Captain Farrell joining him.

Farrell’s yellow for a dangerous tackle on Dragons’ Taine Basham was then upgraded to red which will almost certainly see him miss part of September's World Cup in France.

Wales went further ahead with a Tomos Williams try but England’s 13 men then shoved Maro Itoje over the line to get back in the game.

Replacement George Ford converted to get England within a single point, and with five minutes to go, Joe Marchant should have won the game when he collected a stunning Ford cross-field kick, but knocked on as he landed having taken possession at full tilt.

Wales lock Adam Beard was sin-binned for repeated penalties then Ford calmly kicked the decisive penalty four minutes from the end to secure a hectic victory and cause delight in the stands.
