Groom clears the ball into touch, and the referee brings a close to proceedings. A frustrated Cheetah side departs after an incredibly close encounter. They'll be disappointed to have conceded the lead so late in the game. With minutes to go, WP steal the lead. They win a penalty and boot for the corner. Line-out ball is secured and a rolling maul constructed. Slowly but surely the maul grinds towards the elusive Cheetah whitewash before Captain Fourie crashes over from the rear. Coleman pulls the kick wide - one point the difference!
The ref is blind
Western Province earn a penalty at scrum-time and opt for the quick tap, but a wayward pass gifts Sadie with an intercept. He looks to be through for a try, but the referee decides the Cheetahs hadnt retreated ten metres. Another WP penalty.
The rain is bucketing down now in DHL Newlands, and the conditions are really taking a toll on the players - neither side managing to strong together more than 7 or 8 phases. A cross-field kick from Aplon finds Howard on the wing. But a well structured WP defence arrives in time to bundle the young centre into touch - signalling the half time whistle. Both sides scramble for shelter after an eventful forty minutes.
After ten minutes of punctuated, scrappy rugby, Steven Kitshoff is served yellow for a dangerous clear-out in the ruck - Major setback for Province who were beginning to find their stride.
The big lock forward Micheal Rodes scoops up a wayward line-out ball and bolts down field with impressive pace to score his sides first try. Van Aswegen adds the extras and takes his side to within four points - WP starting to find some rhythm after a shaky first quarter.
