A product of the renowned Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale and later Stellenbosch University, he came through the Western Province development system and quickly established himself as one of the country's top young loose forwards.
De Villiers captained the Junior Springboks at the 2023 World Rugby Under-20 Championship after representing South Africa at age-group level in both 2022 and 2023. Known for his physicality, work rate and leadership qualities, he made his senior debut for Western Province in the Currie Cup before progressing to the Stormers squad in the United Rugby Championship.
