A former captain for Australia Sevens, Murphy had a successful playing career before trading his boots for the whistle in 2016.
His career with the oval ball began with Australian club Brothers Old Boys, where he crossed the try line a record of 96 times, making him the club's all-time leading try-scorer in a career that spanned eleven seasons.
He was selected for the Australian Sevens team in 2004 and played in the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Murphy disclosed his close relationship with the scoreboard when he became Australia's leading points scorer in the 2007–08 Sevens World Series, captaining the team in the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai.
He had a brief spell at the Melbourne Rebels, making 8 appearances in the ARC and in 2012 joined the Reds.
In 2016 he made the successful trade of his boots for the whistle, marking a rapid rise up the refereeing ranks.
He has since refereed at the World Rugby Sevens Series, World Rugby Sevens World Cup, and World Rugby U20 Championships and in 2018 refereed an international between Hong Kong and Cook Islands.
As of May 2020, he has refereed 6 Super Rugby matches, with the 2020 season becoming his second stint at the tournament.
