Shaun Edwards will not be making any more Irish friends because of it, but the Wales defence coach does not care.
He believes the “choke tackle” should be banned because it is “very, very dangerous” and is counter to “exciting” rugby.
The tactic was first employed in 2011 by Les Kiss, the Ireland defence coach who, like Edwards, made his name in rugby league.
The Australian noticed that the rule changes meant that the team taking the ball in to the maul would lose the put-in in any resulting scrum.
