The Lions edged the Sharks 26-19 in a physical opening round Super Rugby encounter. The Sharks opened the scoring with an early try, but the Lions hit back with two scores in quick succession to take a 14-7 lead into the break. The Sharks got off to the perfect start in the second half with an early try reducing the deficit to just two points. The Lions looked to take control of the match with their third try giving them a 21-12 lead. The Sharks responded almost immediately with another try to get right back into it as they trailed 21-19. The sea-saw battle continued as the Lions crossed for their fourth try soon after to lead 26-19 heading into the final quarter of the match. The Lions had chances to extend their advantage, but missed two penalties keeping the Sharks in the game. It almost came back to haunt the hosts, but they kept the Sharks out at the death to hold on for a seven point victory.
