Olympic Sevens Guide

Rugby sevens returns to the Olympic programme at Paris 2024. Antoine Dupont was part of the torch relay and is one of the stars bidding to play in the sevens competition at Stade de France in Saint-Denis from 24-30 July.

The pool phase and quarter-finals are scheduled on 24 and 25 July. The semi-finals, classification matches and medal events are scheduled on 27 July. The women’s tournament will follow from 28-30 July

Rugby sevens

  • Rugby sevens made its debut at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Fiji (men) and Australia (women) became the first Olympic sevens champions. Great Britain and South Africa won silver and bronze medals in the men’s competition, New Zealand and Canada won silver and bronze medals in the women’s
  • Rugby sevens returned for a second Olympic Games at Tokyo 2020 games (played in 2021). Fiji (men) retained their gold medal from 2016 and New Zealand (women) won a first gold medal. New Zealand and Argentina took men's silver and bronze, while France took women's silver and Fiji women's bronze.

All matches will be played at  Stade de France, Saint-Denis, France

Format

The competition format sees all teams play three pool matches with eight teams qualifying for the quarter-finals in the evening session of the second day of competition, before the third day sees the semi-finals and the all-important medal matches as Olympic dreams are realised and broken.
