This will be the first ever men’s Test match between Chile and Scotland – Chile will become the 26th different side that Scotland have faced and the first new one since they defeated Russia by a margin of 61 points in the 2019 Rugby World Cup (61-0).

Chile won their most recent Test match (22-17 v Hong Kong) after losing nine in a row previously, they haven’t won back-to-back Tests since run of three between October and November 2021.

Chile haven’t won a home Test match against European opposition since November 2004, when they defeated Georgia by a margin of six points (30-24) – Chile have lost seven such matches in a row since then, however, their last two home losses against European sides came by margins of just seven and five points respectively.

Scotland have won each of their last two Test matches by margins of 61 and 35 points respectively and should they beat Chile by a margin of 30+ points, it would be the first time that they have won three consecutive Tests by such a margin since 1995.

Scotland have won 12 of their previous 23 Test matches against South American opposition (L11), with each of their last two such victories both coming against Argentina by margins of exactly 23 points – 22 of their previous 23 such games have been against Argentina, with the only exception being a 43-12 victory against Uruguay in the pool stages of the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

Chile made fewer kicks in play (15.5) and garnered fewer kicking metres (406) per game than any other side in the 2023 Rugby World Cup, however, only England (20%) retained possession from a higher share of their kicks than Chile (18%) in the competition.

Scotland opted to attack the openside of the pitch from a higher share of their attacking phases than any other side in the 2023 Rugby World Cup (96%), while Chile opted to attack the blindside more frequently than any other side in the competition (16%).

Scotland (33%) and Chile (24%) had the best and sixth best tackle evasion rates respectively of any sides in the 2023 Rugby World Cup – Scotland also ranked first for both metres gained (650) and defenders beaten (42.3) per game in the competition.

Among the 202 players to have featured for 560+ minutes in this season’s Major League Rugby, only Michael Amiras (2.1) and Benja Bonassoa (1.8) have averaged more dominant tackles per 80 minutes than Chile captain Martin Sigren (1.8).

Scotland’s Duhan van der Merwe is one of just four Tier 1 players to have averaged 5+ defenders beaten per 80 minutes over the last 12 months (5.8, min.400 minutes played) and also ranks fifth for line breaks per 80 over that period (1.7).
