Liverpool-born Matthews began his rugby career in his hometown, before moving to West Yorkshire at 16 to play for the Leeds Academy, also joining local side Otley RFC at club level.
From there, he continued his development with Manchester-based Sedgley Park for a few years - with spells at Rotherham Titans, Hull and Sale Jets - before moving to Scotland the end of the 2016/17 season.
He's represented Scotland at age-group and club international level and has been involved with Edinburgh's squad.
Matthews qualifies to represent Scotland thanks to his mother from Glasgow.
He joined Glasgow's training group ahead of the 2019/2020 season.
