Santiago Arata was born and rasied in Montevideo, Uruguay
He made his international debut for Uruguay against Canada on 6 February 2016.
He was included in the Uruguayan squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup which was held in Japan for the first time and also marked his first World Cup appearance.
On 28 May 2020, Arata signed a major professional contract with French side Castres in the Top 14 competition on a two-year deal from the 2020-21 season
The Uruguayan scrum-half has played 59 matches for Castres since joining, making appearences in Champions Cup, Top 14 and Challenge Cup. He started 33 of these matches scoring 7 tries for the French Club.
Ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2023, Arata has been named in the squad for Uruguay. Following a great RWC2023 he was linked with a host of other Top 14 clubs but Castres managed to re-sign the star 9
