Watch: Jordie Barrett's masterclass against The Highlanders
- 2618
Jordie Barrett put on a master class, scoring all the points in his side’s win through a hat trick of converted tries and two trademark monster penalties as the Hurricanes upset the Highlanders in Dunedin on Friday, winning their first Super Rugby Aotearoa game of the season 19-30.
It was a monster response from the Hurricanes after their disappointing loss to the Chiefs last week.
Barrett's 80th minute penalty goal et a new Super Rugby Aotearoa individual points scoring record.
The Hurricanes started strongly, with an early penalty and try to open up a 10-0 lead after just ten minutes of play. The Highlanders then piled on the pressure which saw the Hurricanes pick up a yellow card, but had to wait until the 33rd minute to get on the board, with a try making it 10-7. The Hurricanes hit back with their second try just before halftime to take a 17-7 advantage into the break. A Hurricanes try just three minutes into the second half was followed by a penalty ten minutes later as the visitors took firm control of the match up 27-7. The Highlanders responded with an unconverted try around the hour mark to reduce the deficit to 15 points. The hosts then crossed for their third try 76 minutes in, but it would prove too little too late as a Hurricanes penalty with time up on the clock sealed their first victory in the competition this season.
Hurricanes 30 (Jordie Barrett 3 tries; Barrett 3 pen, 3 con)
Highlanders 19 (Bryn Evans, Connor Garden-Bachop, Thomas Umaga-Jensen tries; Josh Ioane 2 con)
HT: 17-7 Hurricanes
