Josh Ioane, originally from Auckland, made his way to Dunedin in 2014 to pursue his studies and play age-grade rugby for Otago. In 2015, he represented Samoa U20s.
The Highlanders coaching staff noticed his composure and running skills, leading to his inclusion in the Highlanders wider training squad in December 2016 for pre-season training. Although he didn't play in 2017, Ioane continued to develop his game and gain familiarity with the higher level of competition.
He made his provincial debut later that year and eventually made his Super Rugby debut in 2018.
Ioane's impressive performances for the Highlanders earned him a spot in the Maori All Blacks squad in 2018.
In 2019, he solidified his position as the first-choice fly-half for the Highlanders, accumulating 22 Super Rugby caps before being selected as one of four uncapped players in the All Blacks' Rugby Championship squad.
On September 7, 2019, Ioane made his international debut for New Zealand against Tonga, stepping in as an injury replacement for Richie Mo'unga. He made an immediate impact, scoring 8 points on debut after replacing Beauden Barrett at halftime.
In August 2021, Ioane was released from the final year of his contract with the Highlanders to explore other opportunities. The following day, the Chiefs announced his acquisition for the 2022 season. Ioane made his provincial debut for Otago against North Harbour in 2017 and his Super Rugby debut for the Highlanders in 2018. By 2021, he had played 42 Super Rugby matches for the Highlanders.
Additionally, Ioane made his All Blacks Test debut against Tonga in Hamilton in 2019 and most recently represented the Māori All Blacks in 2021 under the guidance of Head Coach Clayton McMillan.
