Six Nations Countdown: 2017 - Six Nations introduces bonus point system

As we continue to count down towards the kick off of the 2023 Six Nations Championship, we now find ourselves just 17 days out.

The 2017 Six Nations saw the introduction of bonus points into the competition. Used to great effect in a host of other competitions such as Super Rugby in the southern hemisphere, the bonus point system encouraged more attacking rugby with an award of an extra point for a team scoring four or more tries, or losing by seven points or less.

As always, the championship was hotly contested, but it was England who ultimately prevailed as the victors with 4 wins from 5 outings and a total of 19 log points. Interestingly, Ireland, France and Scotland all accumulated 14 log points.

In all, 66 tries were scored in the tournament with an average of 4.4 per game. England picked up the most bonus points (3 – 2 try bonus points and 1 losing bonus point).
