Clermont Auvergne got an early lead in the game despite Racing 92 placing a considerable amount of pressure on the visitors. The game looked to be more in Racng's favour on the pitch but they were simply unable to convert any of their creative, and hence risky, attempts. Clermont were able to do so with less extravagent but effective attempts and the scoreboard showed. By the 21st minute, they were 3-10 up. Racing finally got their first try in the 24th minute with a quick tap from Machenaud but Clermont cancelled that out only two minutes later. It was Racing that got the last laugh in the first half though taking the scores to 15-19 before the break.
Racing were the first to draw blood in the second half, getting an early penalty and taking it to a one point game. Another few minutes a yellow card for Lavenini means that Racing were able to take the lead with a penalty, bringing the score to 21-19. The rest of the second half was an entertaining spectacle with the sides going back and forth, both on the field and on the scoreboard. Racing still seemed to have the more dominant hand on the field but also managed to get the scoreboard in their favour as well. With only five minutes to go, it was still 33-25 and Clermont needed a try to stay relevant but a penalty was all they could muster and the score settled 33-28 with Racing taking the victory!
