Premiership Team of the Week - Round Eight

The final round of the Premiership for the year has come to an end with Exeter finishing the decade on top of the table.

After a scintillating round of action that finished with a stellar encounter between Exeter and Saracens we pick our team of the weekend.

15. Charles Piutau - Bristol Bears

A massive hat tip to George Furbank for his performance for Saints against Gloucester as well as Stuart Hogg and Max Malins but Charles Piutau takes the jersey this week.

There were a number of top draw performances at fullback this weekend with even Telusa Veainu and Matteo Minozzi having great games.


However, Piutau claims the jersey after he scored a try, beat six defenders and made over a hundred running metres. 

14. Zach Kibirige - Wasps


The Wasps man looked threatening every time the ball on Friday as he racked up 78 running metres and came up with a try assist in the win over Bristol.

Semesa Rokoduguni was another right-winger that had a great game this weekend as too did Jack Nowell.


13. Malakai Fekitoa - Wasps

Jonathan Joseph was sublime for Bath, particularly at the breakdown and scored a crucial try but Fekitoa shined in the win over Bristol.

The former All Black played a crucial role in the win beating six defenders, making 100 running metres and made three clean breaks.



12. Piers Francis - Northampton Saints

Francis was excellent in the win over Gloucester and beats his opposite number Mark Atkinson, Harlequins' Paul Lasike and Ollie Devoto to a place in the side.

Francis combined well with Biggar in the first half and stepped up to take the reigns at flyhalf in the second half scoring 10 points.

He beat a massive 7 defenders and made over 30 running metres.

11. Louis Rees-Zammit - Gloucester

Starred in the loss to Saints becoming the youngest player to score a hattrick in a Premiership match.



He beats Tom Howe to a place in the side. Rees-Zammit was superb in finishing his three opportunities and looks set to earn a test call up at some stage.

10 - Joe Simmonds - Exeter Chiefs

A controlled and balanced performance from Joe Simmonds guided Exeter to a victory over Saracens in the final game of the round.

Simmonds nailed his two shots at goal in tough conditions, came up with a clutch turnover over his own tryline to deny Saracens a try and was named man of the match.


Jacob Umaga was superb for Wasps as too was Rhys Priestland for Bath but Simmonds claims the jersey.


9. Nic White - Exeter Chiefs

Cobus Reinach had the jersey after Saturday's Premiership action but White's performance against Saracens gives his the narrowest of edges.

Reinach scored an excellent brace but White controlled Exeter's attack, lead the defence and scored a crucial try in the win.


8. Sam Simmonds - Exeter Chiefs

Nizaam Carr and Taulupe Faletau had stellar games with the former scoring a crucial try in the win over Bristol while Faletau was the man of the match in win over Sale.


While both players deserved a place in the side, Sam Simmonds gets the nod for his massive shift against Saracens. 

He was excellent on both sides of the ball and outplayed his opposite number Billy Vunipola. 

He made a massive 17 tackles, the most in the encounter, won a turnover and made nine carries.

7.Jacques Vermeulen - Exeter Chiefs

Had a few massive carries and sent Saracens tracking back with his superb defence. Vermeulen also scored his first try for the Exeter Chiefs from a driving maul.


Vermeulen was aggressive in everything he did and was given a standing ovation from the Devon faithful when he left the pitch after a stellar 70 minutes.

Lewis Ludlam was also excellent in his 50th Premiership game, Francois Louw in the win over Sale and Chris Robshaw in the stalemate in London.

6. Ted Hill - Worcester Warriors 

The aggressive 20-year-old was sensational on both sides of the ball for Worcester in their win over London Irish.

He made a massive 14 carries making 23 running metres and backed that up with 10 tackles and two turnovers.

Sam Lewis was also great for Leicester Tigers, James Chisholm for the Harlequins in the same game. 

5. Courtney Lawes - Northampton Saints

A huge game from the Saints lock as he made 14 carries and 14 tackles against Gloucester.

He made a surprising 52 running metres beat 4 defenders and made a clean break.

Elliott Stooke also had a strong game this weekend as too did Adam Coleman.

4. Calum Green - Leicester Tigers

The Tigers lock features in our team after a massive defensive effort against the Harlequins making 19 tackles. 

He was good in the lineout and manages to just beat off Dave Dennis to a place in the side.

3. Ehren Painter - Northampton Saints

Excellent in the set pieces and got around the park well helping Saints provide the platform for their backs to take advantage.

2. Tom Dunn - Bath

Luke Cowan-Dickie was another standout in the win over Saracens but Dunn's overall performance against Sale gets him the nod over the Exeter man, Sale's Akker van der Merwe and the Harlequins' Elia Elia.

Dunn was superb in the lineout, carried strongly and was massive on defence lashing out 14 tackles and won a turnover.


1. Coenie Oosthuizen - Sale Sharks

Oosthuizen was superb in a dominant scrummaging performance against Bath and got around the park superbly before he left the field injured.

Joe Marler misses out to the Springbok as too does Alec Hepburn.
