Jacques Vermeulen, a versatile forward, showcased his rugby potential from a young age as he represented Western Province in various competitions.
His journey began in 2011 when he earned a spot in the Western Province under 13 Craven Week side. This was followed by call-ups to the U16 Grant Khomo week and U18 Craven week selections. In 2013, Vermeulen's talent was recognized as he secured a place in the South African Schoolboys side, contributing to their victories over England, Wales, and France.
Although initially not included in the South African U20s squad for the 2014 U20 World Cup, Vermeulen's fortunes changed as he was called in as an injury replacement.
He seized the opportunity and started in four matches, helping South Africa finish as runners-up to England. Building on his success, Vermeulen was once again included in the South Africa U20 squad for the 2015 U20 World Cup.
Vermeulen's progress continued as he represented Western Province in the 2015 U21 Currie Cup. In 2016, he made his Currie Cup debut for Western Province at no.8 in the opening round against the Blue Bulls.
His performances caught the attention of the Sharks, leading to his signing with the team for the 2017 Super Rugby season. He made his Super Rugby debut off the bench against the Reds in the opening round.
In 2019, Vermeulen embarked on a new chapter in his career, joining the Exeter Chiefs on a three-year deal. He made an immediate impact in his debut season, impressing in the No.7 jersey.
His relentless work-rate, solid defense, and scoring ability proved invaluable as he helped the Chiefs secure not only a second Premiership title but also their first-ever Champions Cup crown with a victory over Racing 92 at Ashton Gate.
Despite facing a surgery-induced setback in the 2020/21 season, Vermeulen returned with determination, playing a crucial role in the Chiefs' defense of their titles.
Known for his aggressive playing style and ability to make an impact all over the field, Vermeulen has become a key component in the Chiefs pack.
With his versatility, physicality, and consistent performances, he is set to continue making his mark in the rugby world and contributing to the success of his team.
