One last hurrah for Sofiane Guitoune to prove his worth

One last hurrah for Sofiane Guitoune to prove his worth

Toulouse and Clermont face off in the final of the TOP 14 final at the Stade France on Saturday after the two sides finished the regular season in first and second during the regular season.

The two sides then claimed semi-final wins over La Rochelle and Montpellier to set up what is expected to be an entertaining final.

The French giants have returned to the top of French rugby with attractive attacking styles of play which could lead to a high scoring, free-flowing encounter.

Just as the two sides have returned to the top of their game as too has Toulouse centre Sofiane Guitoune. The fleet-footed centre has just 5 test caps to his name since making his debut back in 2013 against Tonga when he started on the wing.

With the last of his test matches coming against Romania in 2015 at the Rugby World Cup.

However, the 30-year-old has enjoyed arguably the best season of his career which has coincided with Toulouse's revival in both Europe and France.

Guitoune has played in all but five of Toulouse's 35 games this season scoring 16 tries and assisting a further 8, only Virmi Vakatawa has scored more tries in the TOP 14 than Guitoune.

Despite showing enjoying a sensational run of form for Toulouse, he has been somewhat ignored by the French coaching staff as he did not receive a call up for November Internationals nor the 2019 Six Nations.

Guitoune is likely to face up against France stalwart Wesley Fofana and former All Black George Moala in the final of the TOP14, providing him one final hurrah to prove his worth to the national side before the final preparations for the World Cup commence.

Fofana has been a stand out for Clermont and France over the years while Moala has been a hit at Clermont since his arrival. If Guitoune is able to keep the pair reasonably quiet on attack and test them on defence while leading Toulouse to victory, he surely can't be ignored any longer.

Only time will tell but one thing is for sure, Guitoune is one of Toulouse's most potent weapons and could certainly be an asset to France if he were to make the squad.
