Japan Rugby League One Wrap

Round two of the Japan Rugby League One is done and dusted with Canon Eagles and Suntory claiming big wins.

Two games were called off this weekend with Black Rams claiming a bonus-point win for the cancelled game against the Blues Revs with Green Rockets Tokatsu awarded the same for the game against the Saitama Wild Knights.

 

Shining Arcs Tokyo-Bay Urayasu 9-19 Kubota Spears Funabashi Tokyo Bay

Finau Tupa scored the only try in a closely fought match between the Shining Arcs and Kubota Spears. The back-rower scored in the 18th minute after successful penalty shots at goal from Otere Black and Gerhard van den Heever.


Black added his third penalty just after half-time which was the final points scored by the Arcs in the game. 

van den Heever knocked over three more penalties, missing just one as the Spears secured the 9-19 win.


 

Yokohama Canon Eagles 55-21 Kobelco Kobe Steelers

The Canon Eagles produced the shock of the round as they smashed last season's semi-finalist 55-21.

The Eagles soared in the opening minutes of the encounter scoring four unanswered tries in the first 15 minutes through Chihito Matsui, Koki Arai, Yusuke Kajimura, and Jumpei Ogura.

Fraser Anderson did get one back after the 20-minute mark but Yusuke Kajimura got another just three minutes later. Ryuhei Arita got one back for Kobe as the Eagles led 34-14 at halftime.

Japanese internationals Amanaki Mafi and Ryohei Yamanaka each scored a try in the first quarter of the second half for their respective sides.

Kajimura completed his hattrick with Jacobnus van Dyk scoring in the 79th minute to rub further salt in the Kobe wounds.

 

NTT DoCoMo Red Hurricanes Osaka 16-35 Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo

Brave Lupus secured a bonus-point win over the Red Hurricanes despite centre Johnny Fa'iauli and lock Warner Dearns going to the sin bin after the hour mark with the former shown a red card.

Former All Black Matt Todd scored two tries for Todd Blackadder's side with Takahiro Ogawa, Takuro Matsunagam and Jone Naikabula also dotting down for the victors.

Ruan Vermaak scored the only try for the Red Hurricanes with Ei Kawamukou adding the remaining points from the tee.

 

Tokyo Sungoliath 50-8 Toyota Verblitz

 

Damian McKenzie scored his first try in the competition adding 15 points from the tee for a total of 20 points in the 50-8 win.

Jamie Henry scored the only try for Verblitz with Sean McMahon (2), Shogo Nakano, Seiya Ozaki, Naoto Saito, and Hideto Niguma scoring for the victors.
