All Blacks Player Ratings v England

All Blacks Player Ratings v England

The All Blacks led by 14 points inside 10 minutes and extended that lead further in the second half, yet somehow they missed out on a seventh successive victory.

England ran in three tries in the final eight minutes to fight back from 18 points down and earn a barely believable 25-25 draw against New Zealand.

Here is how we rated the All Blacks in their final test of 2022.

Beauden Barrett - 6

Brilliantly hit Caleb Clarke with a cross kick to set Rieko Ioane up for his try and knocked over a superb drop goal. However, he was yellow carded soon after and that's when England took control of the encounter.

His kicking out of hand was excellent but he had little impact running with ball in hand.

Mark Telea - 7

Another strong performance after a double on debut last week. He chased the Barretts kicks well, showed off his fend and footwork on attack and won a key penalty at the breakdown. Continues to grow and we are bound to see him in the black jersey again next year.

Rieko Ioane - 5

He scored a breakaway try and landed a good hit on Hill but overall it was a disappointing performance from Ioane who conceded two turnovers, had his own try disallowed for a high clear out and went missing on defence for Steward's try.

Jordie Barrett - 8

Another game in the centres where Barret looked the best All Black on the pitch. He did spill an unkind pass from Aaron Smith near the try line but there was few negatives outside of that.

He showed his value in all facets with some beautiful cross kicks and clearance kicks while he carried and distributed well and defended superbly.

Caleb Clarke - 7

Put the pressure on Jack Nowell under the high ball and had some bright moments with ball in hand. He did very well to create space for Ioane to speed away and score.

Richie Mo'unga - 6

An up and down game from Mo'unga. He failed to find touch with his penalties and then had some brilliant kicks to Clarke and Telea.

He shone at times with his passing and footwork but made some silly decisions.

Aaron Smith - 6.5

He kept a good tempo with his passes and kicked well out of hand when needed.

Ethan de Groot - 5

A busy performance on defence and at the breakdown. He managed to just hang in there under pressure in the scrum.

Codie Taylor - 7

Another try for the hooker, but there were still some malfunctions at lineout time; some were his doing, others were not.

Tyrel Lomax - 6

He made some telling contributions in the rucks both on attack and defence, while his scrummaging was a pass.

Brodie Retallick - 8

One hundred up, and it was another strong performance from the evergreen All Black lock. He was brilliant at the breakdown, abrasively took the ball to the line and was solid defensively—a trademark performance.

Sam Whitelock - 7.5

Worked brilliantly with his second-row partner on the night they bettered Bakkies Botha and Victor Matfield's record for the most tests as a starting pair.

Industrious on defence and ran the lineout well too.

Scott Barrett - 7

Abrasive in all facets of the game and looks more and more comfortable on the side of the scrum.

Dalton Papali'i - 6

He timed his run perfectly to pick van Poortvliet's pass off - taking the laws into account brilliantly to as England's lineout throw going over the 15-metre line meaning the lineout was over.

He grabbed a turnover too but it was an otherwise quiet game from the flanker.

Ardie Savea - 8

Savea was superb in forcing turnovers from the All Blacks and van Poortvliet's under par performance had a lot to do with Savea pestering him at the rucks.

A busy tackler and came up with a  few goal line turnovers.

Replacements:

Samisoni Taukei'aho - 6

Little impact on attack but made his tackles.

George Bower - 4

He made his tackles but little more as England dominated the closing stages.

Nepo Laulala - 4

Much like Bower, England dominated the latter stages and Laulala made little to no impact.

Shannon Frizell - 4

Little impact from the bench.

Hoskins Sotutu - 5

On in the 73rd minute when England's tails were up. Had almost no opportunities to influence.

TJ Perenara - 5

Some wayward kicking cost New Zealand in the end.

David Havili - n/a

On in the final minute of the match.

Anton Lienert-Brown - 5

On in the latter stages of the match and was caught out defensively.
