7 Key Moments: South Africa v Scotland

The Springboks welcomed Scotland at a newly revamped Loftus Versveld for a second-round match of the Nations Championship. The Scots came and proved to be no walkover as they went toe-to-toe with the Springboks, but SA proved why they are the World Champions winning 48-28.

Here are a few key moments from the match.

6’ Scotland get a penalty and kick for touch. They setup a lineout on South Africa’s 5m line, SA contest and knock it on but the ref says the throw wasn’t straight, so SA are able to exit and escape the early pressure.

15’ Scotland have a goal-line drop out after they held up SA on the try line, on the first ruck Ambrose Papier snipes over the ruck and runs it in for a moment of brilliance.

33’ Scotland get a scrum on the 5m line after a SA knock on, they get awarded a penalty from it and they choose to tap and go, and they manage to go over the line for their first score.

55’ The Springboks get a scrum after a Scotland knock on, they play it and after 12 phases going up the field they score in the corner.

63’ SA setup an attacking lineout on the Scots 5m line from a penalty, they look to maul but its overthrown. Pollard gathers it and plays a few phases and Porthen muscles over the line.

72’ It’s a 7-point ball game after Scotland got back 2 tries, they break again in the 73rd minute and SA are on the back foot. Jordan gives a cross kick to Steyn who has one eye on the ball and one on the defender and he spills the ball about 10 metres from the SA try line.  

76’ Scotland skipper Tuipulotu breaks the line and races away, but a loose pass goes into touch and it’s the Springboks ball. They restart from the lineout and play a few phases. Pollard chips the ball ahead into space and Kriel gathers it and beats the defender to score under the posts.

South Africa will face Wales next week and Scotland will face Fiji.
