Jane has previously played for Hawke's Bay and was in the New Zealand team that won the Rugby Sevens gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

He also represented the Māori All Blacks team in 2006 and was third-equal on the 2006 Air New Zealand Cup leading try scorer list with 6 tries, behind Richard Kahui (8 tries) and Sitiveni Sivivatu (7 tries), both from Waikato.

He was a member of the All Black team that won the 2011 Rugby Union World Cup. He is known in world rugby for his left hand fend, and his raw pace on the outside of players. In 2012 he played on the wing for the Hurricanes.

He was not included in the 2012 All Blacks team for the series against Ireland due to injury, but was selected again for 2012 Rugby Championship and was part of the side that beat Australia in the first two tests of the Bledisloe Cup. An injury plagued few seasons has seen him come back well in 2015 as he was selected for the Rugby Championship squad as he hopes to add to his 55 caps and 18 test tries.

In May 2016, he was one of the players dropped by the Hurricanes following a late night out and breaking the curfew.

Jane was injured for the opening rounds of Super Rugby 2017 but returned in week 7 to face the Waratahs where he made his 112 Super Rugby appearance.

He has been a consistent try-scorer in his career and has scored 30 tries for the Hurricanes and 17 for the All Blacks.

Jane has made 10 appearances for Top League side Toshiba Brave Lupus, scoring 15 points since joining the Japanese club in 2016.

The World Cup winner made 9 appearances for the Hurricanes during the 2017 Super Rugby season and appeared off the bench for the British and Irish Lions.

Jane left the Hurricanes at the end of the 2017 Super Rugby season and re-joined Brave Lupus.

Following his retirement, the legendary All Black joined the Wellington Lions' Mitre 10 Cup coaching staff as a defence coach.

He joined the Hurricanes coaching staff as a defence coach ahead of the 2020 Super Rugby season.
