Mixed display by All Black greats: A look at Barrett and Ioane form

The All Blacks got their tour off to a winning start with all eyes on Dave Rennie's men as they prepare to face the Springboks in four test matches. There were a number of players that are on the fringe of making the test 23 and two high profile players were Beauden Barrett and Rieko Ioane. 

Both Barrett and Ioane are looking to show Rennie that he will seriously need to look at his mathday 23 in order to fit them in but it was a mised bag for the paor with Ioane having the better outing. Ioane looks much more comfortable at wing than he does at 13 but covers both positions well enough to be an option at test level. He hit the ground running in Cape Town with a number of breaks early on and providing a constant threat for the the Stormers' defence and moved into the midfield after Proctor was injured.

The man who has just returned from winning the URC with Leinster saw his stocks rising while Barrett could have seen his stocks fall and possibly have more work to do if he were to force his way back into the test side.

Barrett could not get a grip and control the game like we are used to seeing, much of this was the result of the constant stop start which the Stormers seeked out as well as a poor set piece. He did not have as many clear cut chances but you would expect more from a player with over 140 test appearances especially with his form under the high ball.

While Barrett is not completely out the reconning you feel that Love and McKenzie have the inside track for the 10 and 15 jersey.
