5 Talking Points after Round One of the Six Nations
- 127
After three high end, action packed games, we look back at the Top 5 talking points after round one of the Six Nations
1. Wales Woes
Wales conceded seven tries and failed to score a point in the first match of the Six Nations. It was the Welsh teams worst defeat in Paris (43-0). It was also the first time they failed to score a point in a Six Nations match.
2. Dupont magic
Dupont marked his return to Six Nations action after a year's hiatus, a successful gamble on winning Olympic sevens gold in Paris, in impressive style creating three tries in 22 minutes.
3.Italy fightback
After 20min in their first Six Nations match, Italy were trailing 14-0. On the 20-minute mark, Italy finally registered their first points when fullback Tommaso Allan (coincidentally, a former Scotland U20 player) struck a penalty with Jonny Gray going offside. The Perpignan playmaker didn’t need to wait long to double his tally, a long effort sailing through the post after Russell was penalised at a ruck: 14-6. Going into the half, Italy were trailing 19-9. Juan Ignacio Brex, so prominent throughout the first half, made a simple job of intercepting a Russell pass to Huw Jones to score from near enough halfway. With Allan’s conversion, Scotland had unthinkably let slip what had once been a convincing lead.
The Azzurri were desperate to fulfil the promise of 2024’s unprecedented campaign in this competition, and to do the double against the Scots. That failed to materialise, but they had played their part in a thoroughly entertaining encounter in the Scottish capital, and we can look forward to more of the same in this year's Championship.
4.Huw Jones x 3
The 31-year-old carried for 131 metres from 13 carries, with his tries coming in the eights, 60th and 65th minute of the match. His head coach, Gregor Townsend, said of him after the match: "There were a lot of positive aspects [to Huw's game]. He's such an all-round player, he runs brilliant lines, he finishes well - and he's a very, very good defender. Today he supported very well."
5. Perfect start for Easterby
Simon Easterby’s Ireland were the second-best side in the first forty, but a strong final 30 minutes for the home side eventually saw them find their way to a 27-22 win against a resolute England.
