Will Greenwood

Will Greenwood remains the last man to be called up by the Lions before winning an international cap when he earned selection to the 1997 Tour to South Africa.

Sir Ian McGeechan liked what he saw of the young centre who formed a fine midfield partnership with Allan Bateman for the midweek side on that Tour.

Injury curtailed both his 1997 Tour, when the quick thinking of teammate Austin Healey and then Dr James Robson saved his life after he swallowed his tongue in a midweek clash with Free State, and the 2001 Tour to Australia.

Against the Wallabies it was an ankle injury that ruled him out of contention so it was on his third Tour to New Zealand that Greenwood finally won his first Test cap.

By then a World Cup winner with England, the former Leicester Tigers and Harlequins centre came off the bench in the first Test and started the third in defeat to the All Blacks.
