After representing the Golden Lions in 2001, the former Eastern Province and Cheetahs lock Pieterse received a call-up to the South Africa national team, becoming Springbok No 793 and making one appearance in the 5–22 defeat against the Barbarians in London on 1 December 2007.
A move to the Eastern Province Kings soon followed in 2011, which saw him rack up 16 appearances before retiring at the end of 2012 and becoming the lineout coach for the Southern Kings.
After Robbie Kempson resigned as the team's head coach in 2016, Pieterse took control of the Kings for the 2016/17 season and beyond.
