Wallabies Player Ratings - Bledisloe II

Wallabies Player Ratings - Bledisloe II

The Wallabies have gone down 27-7 to New Zealand at Eden Park to give the All Blacks a 1-nil lead in the 2020 Bledisloe Cup Series.

Australia had all the early ball and territory but couldn’t capitalise due to intense breakdown pressure from New Zealand.

The Australians stayed in the game up until half time where the All Blacks took control with Caleb Clarke the chief destroyer.

New Zealand ran in three tries in the second half to secure the convincing win after leading just 10-7 at the break.

Here is how we rated the Wallabies:

1.James Slipper - 7

One of the Wallabies' best in the back. Excellent early on powering through Ofa Tuungafasi in the scrums.

He continued to deliver in the set piece before being taken off after 54 minutes.

2.Brandon Paenga-Amosa - 6.5

The lineouts looked far better than last week with him throwing the darts.

Came close to scoring but was outdone but double movement.

Taken off after 51 minutes.

3.Taniela Tupou - 5

Not a game he will look back fondly on.

He looked dangerous when he did touch the ball but was outdone by silly decisions. One of which was to kick the ball away when the Wallabies made a turnover.

Solid enough at the scrum but taken off at half time.

4. Lukhan  Salakaia-Loto - 5

Outmuscled by the All Blacks' pack that was going forward. Missed three of his 11 attempted tackles.

Not terrible but not great either.

5.Matt Philip - 6

Cleared rucks well, made his tackles and was a threat on attack.

The Wallabies' locking crisis looks less like a crisis each week with Philip performing the way he is.

6.Ned Hanigan - 5

For everything good Hanigan did, he followed it up with a silly error or a blatant penalty.

His hard-working approach to the game comes with its risks and rewards and Hanigan got both on Sunday.

He made an excellent break in the build-up to Koroibete's try and made some excellent steals including one inside his 22 after the half-hour mark but he was also penalised fluently in the first half.

He topped the tackle count for the Wallabies as well as the penalty count.

7.Michael Hooper - 7.5

Hardly ever has a bad game for the Wallabies, especially against the All Blacks.

One of the Wallabies best at Eden Park as he usually is.

He sprinted around the pitch making tackles, cover tackles while also working as a link man making 9 passes and 5 carries for 17 metres.

A high missed tackle count of five will disappoint him but the Wallabies overall missed 30!

8.Harry Wilson - 6

Some solid hits from the youngster early on the one Sam Cane was particularly good.

He lasted just 51 minutes and was missed by the Wallabies when he left the pitch.

A promising future ahead but he was not as impactful as he was last week, one has to think the stomach bug he had should have seen him rested for this one. Solid nonetheless.

9.Nic White - 6

Didn't have the same impact he did last week as the Wallabies changed their approach somewhat.

In Wellington White carried the ball 14 times compared to his single carry this week as the halfback shifted the ball and kicked more.

His service was still solid with little errors.

10. James O'Connor - 6

O'Connor struggled once Toomua left the pitch and was far less attacking than he was in Wellington.

A few drop passes and a number of average ones out of his own hands.

A loose kick from O'Connor to Caleb Clarke set up the try for Ardie Savea with the Wallabies not chasing the kick.

His four missed tackles didn't help their cause either. Some slick touches but his game management needs work if he is to continue at 10.

11.Marika Koroibete - 4

One try and almost another but never looked safe with his handling or passing.

Struggled to contain the All Blacks attacks and butchered a number of the Wallabies threats.

One of his worst performances in some time.

12.Matt To'omua - 7.5

Solid defence and shifted the ball nicely following the attack well.

Was excellent for the 34 minutes he was on the pitch and the game could well have been very different had he stayed on it.

13.Hunter Paisami - 6

Played in the unnatural inside centre role after To'omua' exit.

Was caught out defensively quite a few times but ran some neat lines on attack and in support.

Should keep his starting jersey despite the return to fitness of Petaia.

14.Filipo Daugunu - 6.5

Saw plenty of ball and made the most of it.

Powerful runs and good link up play but he was caught out on defence managing to make just half of his attempted tackles.

15.Tom Banks - 6

Some good moments for the fullback but he had a few bad ones too conceding three turnovers.

Not quite a threat on attack either.

Substitutes:

16.Jordan Uelese - 6

The Wallabies scrum came undone in the second half once he was injected.

He was good in open play though making his two attempted tackles and 29 running metres from just four carries.

17.Scott Sio - 4

Somewhat anonymous during his 27-minute stint.

18.Allan Alaalatoa - 6

The scrummaging from the reserve front row needs work but Alaalatoa weighed in well on defence and troubled the All Blacks on attack.

19.Rob Simmons - 4

Much like Sio, Simmons was anonymous.

20.Liam Wright - 6

Stripped of the ball by TJ Perenara with a threatening attack but made some good carries and a crucial steal.

21.Jake Gordon - 6

Not quite the situation you want an inexperienced test halfback to come on in.

The Wallabies were disjointed a lacking a spark that Gordon was unable to provide.

22.Jordan Petaia - 6.5

A few moments of brilliance where he took on the All Blacks defence and beat a few defenders with a step or fend.

Signs of what he is capable of but there is still some loose bits in his game.

23. Reece Hodge - n/a

Given just 15 minutes to make an impact.

Not long enough for a fair rating.
