Top Performers: Blues v Chiefs

Top Performers: Blues v Chiefs

Another entertaining New Zealand derby early on in the competition as both sides came out firing in Round 3 of Super Rugby.

The Blues battled well but the Chiefs were able to come away with the win and have not lost to the Blues since 2011.

Here are the players that stood out in this clash:

Augustine Pulu

6 tackles and 2 turnovers, Pulu was in fine form defensively and put in a few bone-crunching tackles especially against his opposite number.

The Blues captain also opened the scoring for the home side off the back of a solid driving maul.

He controlled the Blues attack well and was able to make 2 clean breaks.

Solomon Alaimalo

The Blues struggled to maintain the speedy winger as he made over 100 metres, beat 4 defenders and a hand in just about all of the Chiefs tries.

His deft sidestep and raw speed put the Blues on the back foot every time he got the ball.

Liam Messam

The out-going Chiefs veteran had a stellar match for his side. He was destructive at the breakdown and made 6 tackles.

His ball carrying was also exceptional as he made over 30 metres from his 2 carries and made two clean breaks.

Akira Ioane

Ioane scored his 3rd try in 2 matches for the Blues in this match, his brilliant solo run extended the Blues lead early in the game.

He continued to perform on attack making over 40 metres from his 10 carries.

Melani Nanai

Nanai topped the running metres in the match with 150 metres, he also beat 6 defenders and made 2 clean breaks.

His two turnovers and three offloads completed a fantastic performance by the Blues fullback.
