Rugby is known to be a thugs' game played by gentlemen but from time to time tempers flare & punches are thrown. Here are 5 of the biggest punch ups in rugby
5. Duncan McRae Hits Ronan O'Gara 11 times
It was the the 2001 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia and the Lions were playing the New South Wales Waratahs. The Waratahs were under pressure in their own 22. Duncan McRae gets hot headed and finds himself on the ground beside Ronan O'Gara.
Whether the Lion did or said something to McRae we don't know but McCrae was definitely not an O'Gara fan.
He punched the Lions out-half 11 times in the face leaving him in need of medical attention. O'Gara was treated and recieved 8 stitches
above his eye. McRae was duely awarded a red card for his actions.
4. Sebastien Chabal KO'd Marc Giraud
Agen and Lyon were playing in the Pro D2, and Lyon were down 12-6. Marc Giraud successfully slowed Chabal down after a maul but the Lyon man
was not happy.
The No.4 lock swung around and made a connection with the left side of Girauds head. Giraud collapsed immediately and Chabal was awarded a yellow card.
3. Manu Tuilagi lays three into big Chris Ashton
A classic here. Manu tuilagi falsely predicted that Chris Ashton was going to recieve the ball. He stuck out his arm as a lazy attempt to tackle him. This clothes-lined Ashton but he kept his cool and managed
to only slightly react with a small push. B
ut this only sparked things and Tuilagi reacted extremely badly. He punched the Toulon bound player 3 times and big Chris did extremely well to stay on his feet considering the power of the Samoan bread English man. Both players received a yellow card even though Ashtons actions were only minor compared to what Tuilagi did.
2. Salesi Ma'afu combo on Tom Youngs
Northhampton Saints were playing against Leicester tigers and 15 minutes into the second half and Leicester were ahead but had a yellow card. Northampton were in the Leicester 22 and were looking for a try to bring them back into the game. There was a Northhampton maul and this is where it started.
Tom Youngs was holding onto Ma'afu which aggravated him. Ma'afu lashed out at Youngs with an uppercut followed by a left hook to the side of the head knocking the Leicester man off his feet.
1. Hedi Ouedjdi knocks out referee
Toulouse clashed with St Esteves in a Junior French Rugby League Cup. The referee had just blown for a penalty and was waiting for a Ouedjdi to return to his team when he made a comment that the St Esteves Player obviously did not like at all. He turned to the referee, replied to his comment and hit him in he temple with a very powerful right hook.
The referee, Benjamin Casty, collapsed to the floor instantly unconcious. When Ouedjdi was confronted by other players on the opposing team he proceeded to punch them and it started a brawl between the two teams with most of them just trying to split up the fights. Definitely deserved of a life time ban for rugby whether it be league or union, disgraceful.
