The Brumbies have announced that former Waratahs full-back Peter Hewat has signed on to become Backs Coach commencing with the 2018 Super Rugby season.
Hewat, who bagged 636 points in only fifty matches for the Waratahs across three seasons, has been coaching at Suntory Sungoliath in the Japanese Top League for the past five years, having been a standout as a player for the Asian powerhouse for a trio of years prior to his coaching appointment.
Having also played 78 times for London Irish in the English Premiership, Hewat will bring a wealth of knowledge to the role, linking up with fellow Assistant Coaches Laurie Fisher and Peter Ryan as part of Head Coach Dan McKellar’s staff.
“Peter was obviously a very good player at the Waratahs and was known for his goal-kicking and his ability to score a try,” McKellar said.
“He has been at Suntory for eight years, four as a player and four as a coach, and, in my role as a consultant to Suntory, I have witnessed his progression.
“Peter is ready for an opportunity to coach at Super Rugby level. His focus will be heavily on the skills aspect and he will be a huge benefit to our backs in particular.”
