Ollie Thorley was red-carded in Gloucester's 19-20 victory over Wasps at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday with the decision leaving some fans perplexed while others were enraged by the sending off.
The winger collided with Wasps’ Rob Miller and knocked himself out with his sending off coming after he was helped off the pitch.
Referee Matthew Carley felt he had no choice to send the winger off.
Twitter's reaction to the incident:

Ollie Thorley red card, my god😂😂

Yeah I think that decision is disgraceful to be honest. Thorley can’t be penalised further for that surely. Hopefully @gloucesterrugby go on to win this now.

I’m assuming Thorley’s red card can be appealed? Having just watched a replay, that a shocker from Carley #WASvGLO

That red card for Thorley is completely ridiculous. Entirely accidental and ends in a red card. Rugby becoming more like football by the day.

He wasn't ducking. Thorley needs to tackle lower. The referee was right.

Not seen that before. A player sent off while already off having a HIA. Gloucester wing Ollie Thorley the player to be red carded for head-on-head contact as he went to tackle Wasps full-back Rob Miller. Actually came off worse in the collision.

The TMO openly admitted to no foul play by Thorley.

The on field ref was looking for a reason to give a red card.
He wanted to give a red.
Then you get two wasps players. Attacking Carreas and it's only a yellow?
Absolutely pathetic.#gloucesterRugby
Well what on earth has happened here Ollie Thorley has been sent off for what looked a head on head collision between him and Miller.

That looks very harsh to me. Big slice of luck for Wasps.
Rugby has to be able to differentiate between red cards for head contact like that from Thorley (accidental in my view) and Hepetema last night.

Matt Carley going through the incident by the letter of the law, step by step. Think he’s reffed that extremely well. Explained his decision and the reason behind it. Right or wrong....done exactly the right thing by the laws.
