JWC: Last gasp win thrills Carolan
Ireland’s composure to secure a last-gasp win over Argentina thrilled their coach Nigel Carolan after Tuesday’s late drama.

Replacement back Tomas Quinlan landed an exceptional penalty from the touchline to clinch an 18-16 victory for the Irish over los Pumitas.

The result looked to hand been lost for Ireland in a match where they relied on the boots of first Joel Carberry, who scored five penalties, and then Quinlan to seal the result, with Santiago Portillo grabbing the only try of the game for Argentina just after half-time.

Such a valuable win means that Ireland keep the pace with New Zealand down in Pool C, ahead of facing Scotland on Saturday.

“I was certainly happy with the amount of opportunities we created, particularly in the first half, and if it was represented on the scoreboard it might have been a different game,” said Carolan.

“I thought the character our team showed at the end to get back to get the penalty I thought it was tremendous work rate and effort.”
