Jordan Petaia re-signs with Australian Rugby

Rugby Australia has announced that Queensland and Wallabies outside back Jordan Petaia has re-signed through to the end of 2024.

The 22-year-old's recommitment to Australian Rugby is a major win for the code and puts him in a strong position to make the national squad for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

Wallaby number 930, Petaia scored on his Test debut against Uruguay as a 19-year-old at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and went on to take out the Rugby Australia Rookie of the Year award in the same year.

Born in Victoria and raised in Brisbane, Petaia has worn the gold jersey on 16 occasions and the maroon of Queensland 35 times, including starting on the wing in their 2021 Harvey Norman Super Rugby AU triumph.

Known for his athleticism and skill under the high ball, Petaia has shown his versatility across the backline in recent years, playing in both the centres and across the back three.

Petaia joins fellow Wallabies teammates Darcy Swain, Andrew Kellaway, Izack Rodda and Izaia Perese in re-committing to Australian Rugby this month.

Wallabies and Queensland Reds outside back Jordan Petaia said: "I'm very happy and grateful to have re-signed with the Reds and Rugby Australia.

“We have built something special here at Ballymore and I love being around the playing group and staff in Queensland.

"I have so much room to grow and things to achieve here in Australia and the current environment at the Reds and the Wallabies can help me get there.

"With my immediate future secured, it allows me to focus on improving my game on the field and I'll be doing everything I can to give myself the best opportunity to be at my best for selections this year and the next.”

Wallabies coach Dave Rennie said: "Jordan's an impressive young man and his re-commitment to Australian Rugby is a massive positive for Reds and Wallabies supporters."

"He's an outstanding athlete who's developing his skill set and game awareness as well as making shifts in his preparation which will ensure he gets the most out of his potential.

"At only 22, he's still scratching the surface of what he's capable of as a player and remaining in Brisbane will give him stability to continue to grow off the field as well."

Reds General Manager – Professional Rugby Sam Cordingley said: "We are delighted that Jordy has committed through 2024."

“Jordy is wonderful talent and outstanding young man, we are proud to have him at club.

“It’s a great outcome for the Reds and Wallabies, there was extraordinary interest in Jordy from some of the world’s biggest spending clubs, so I’d like to acknowledge Rugby Australia and Jordy’s manager for their efforts to get a positive result through the negotiation.”
