Former Scotland Scrumhalf Greig Laidlaw Set For Surprising Move

Former Scotland Scrumhalf Greig Laidlaw Set For Surprising Move

Former Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw is set to leave Clermont at the end of the season with the club having already signed a replacement for Morgan Parra.

Parra and Laidlaw's contracts were both expiring and the club allowed the former to explore his options and signed Toulouse scrum-half Sebastien Bezy incase Parra opted to leave the Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin.

Parra has since opted to remain at the club and now Clermont is unable to hold onto all three scrum-halves with Laidlaw set to leave.

TOP14 hopefuls, Perpignan were said to have offered Laidlaw and deal to join them but it is believed that he was not keen to potentially play in France's second division. The Scot initially went to France after a three-season stint at Gloucester in the English Premiership.

Laidlaw has since reportedly signed for an unnamed Top League club in Japan for the 2021 season.

The Top League has terminated its 2020 season early due to the coronavirus pandemic but Laidlaw’s reported move there suggests thoughts are already looking towards next year.

French bi-weekly, Midi Olympique, has reported that he is heading back to Japan to prolong his career.

Laidlaw is a fan favourite in Japan and would join a host of stars playing the Top League.
