Can the Stormers break their six-year duck in New Zealand?
- 1278
Over the past few years, there has been a lot said about Robbie Fleck’s reign as Stormers coach and one thing that has popped up regularly is people suggesting how poor his side has been on the overseas leg of their previous seasons. To try shed some light on the matter we decided to dive into the record books and see the is any truth to the assumptions.
This weekend the Stormers will be hoping to get a massive monkey off their back as the Cape franchise hopes to end a six-year drought in New Zealand against the Blues. The men in blue and white have not won in All Black territory since 2013 (Alistair Coetzee’s reign).
Another worrying factor at the moment is that the Stormers have won only one of their last 11 Super Rugby games away (overseas and local derbies included).
While things may seem a little grim with everything said above, it seems Fleck has not had a terrible record overseas and has arguably only had one blemish on his record which is a draw and loss against the Sunwolves.
Here is Fleck’s conclusive overseas record:
2016: (P15 W10 D1 L4)
Away Wins: Jaguares, Rebels, Western Force
Away Losses: 0
Draw: Sunwolves
2017: (P15 W10 L5)
Away Wins: Sunwolves
Away Losses: Crusaders, Highlanders, Hurricanes,
2018: (P16 W6 L10)
Away Wins: 0
Away Losses: Waratahs, Crusaders, Highlanders, Sunwolves, Jaguares
2019: (P5 W3 L2)
Away Wins: Still Pending
Away Losses: Hurricanes
Besides the horrid 2018 season, the Stormers haven’t actually been that disappointing when playing overseas but they do need to start picking up wins in NZ if they to ever go on and lift a Super Rugby title.
