Quick thinking by Matthewson forces the penalty. Matthewson opts for a quick line-out to exploit a disorganised Highlander defence. He links with Hayward and they tear down the wing. When Hayward looks to offload, Smith slaps the ball down and kills the attack. Referee spots it, and Hayward makes no mistakes with the kick.

Just as Highlanders begin to build momentum in the Force half, a wayward pass by Parker leads to a knock-on by Nonu. Again, stringing more than 4/5 phases together is proving difficult for the Highlanders.

Force draw first blood when Ebersohn darts over in the corner. Force patiently build their way into the Highlander twenty-two, feeding the forwards on the ruck fringes. The ball is then fired wide to Hayward who slips through the defence and looks to be in. But he's brought down short, and the ball is recycled to Ebersohn for the try. Hayward converts form out wide.

Excellent back-line play off the back of the scrum, with Smith looking particularly dangerous. But the Highlanders struggle to string together more than four phases, coughing up possession and allowing the Force to clear.
