Match Facts

Argentina have won each of their previous 39 Test matches against Uruguay by an average margin of 33 points, with this set to be their first Test meeting since a 22-point win in May 2015 (36-14).

Excluding matches at neutral venues, Argentina won their most recent away game (v Spain in August 2023) and they will be aiming to record back to back wins on the road for the first time since winning four in a row from 2014 to 2015 – a run that included victory against Uruguay.

The only Test team both Uruguay and Argentina have played so far this year is France, both facing Les Bleus this month; Los Pumas drew their two-match series with France, losing the first Test (13-28) before winning the second (33-25), while Uruguay lost their clash with Les Bleus by 15 points (28-43).

Uruguay have won nine of their last 11 matches on home soil (L2), a run that includes victory over an Argentina XV in July 2021; this will be the first time they’ve played in Maldonado since facing an Argentina XV in the Americas Rugby Championship in February 2018.

Uruguay have won each of their last nine matches on home soil against fellow South American opposition, however, their most recent such win came by a single-point margin (26-25 v Chile), while Argentina have won all 108 of their previous Tests against South American opposition by an average margin of 48 points.

Argentina completed a higher share of their rucks in under three seconds than any other side in the 2023 Rugby World Cup (69%), while only Portugal (97.1%) retained possession from a higher share of their attacking rucks than the Pumas (96.6%).

Uruguay won the fourth most turnovers per game of any side in the 2023 Rugby World Cup (6.8), while Argentina were the only team to average fewer than four turnovers won per game during last year’s tournament (3.9).

Uruguay’s Felipe Etcheverry directly assisted more tries per 80 minutes than any of the other 327 players to feature for 160+ minutes in the 2023 Rugby World Cup (1.6) – Etcheverry also assisted a try against France during Uruguay’s most recent Test match.

Uruguay’s Manuel Ardao won the most turnovers per 80 minutes among all 197 players to feature for 240+ minutes in the 2023 Rugby World Cup (1.9) – Ardao also won four turnovers against France during Uruguay’s most recent Test match.

Joaquin Oviedo made 22 carries for Argentina in their most recent Test (v France), the most by an Argentina player in a Test match since Jeronimo De La Fuente made 23 against Wales in June 2018.
