What a finish to this ITM Cup Final. After their complete dominance of pressure and territory in this final 40mins, Hawke's Bay break up the touchline after mismatches in the defence and with some well-worked offloads send sub Chris Eaton over in the corner to put the Magpies only 1 point behind. West, however, fails to add the extras from the wide touchline in what was the final kick of the game. Bitter disappointment in the Hawke's Bay camp as their complete dominance was a case of too little too late. Relief on Tasman faces as they manage to close the game off despite spending almost the entire half in their own 22m. But that marks the end of Ultimate Rugby's coverage of this thrilling encounter - hope you all enjoyed it!
Sucks for him
Tasman penalised once more for ill-discipline at the breakdown. West steps up from 40m out and is successful with his attempt despite all the jeers ringing around the stadium. The gap is now reduced to 6 points with little over 5 mins to play.
Reckless penalty given away by the Magpies as a scrum is upgraded to a penalty for Hawke's Bay back chat. Banks steps up and splits the uprights to a chorus of cheers from Trafalgar Park. A crucial score as Hawke's Bay now need to score twice.
And Hawke's Bay finally get that much sought after try. After wave after wave of relentless pressure and turning down attempts at goal, the Magpies spread the ball wide for Buckman to draw in two defenders before delicately offloading the ball to Brendon O'Connor to touch down for the first try of the half. West finally finds the radar and adds the extras and reduces the gap to only 6 points.
West sees another attempt drift left of the uprights, only seconds from his previous missed attempt. Hawke's Bay really need to capitalise on this constant pressure if they are to put themselves back in the game.
Hawke's Bay have certainly started the brighter of the two teams and after constant pressure deep in the Makos 22, they are awarded a penalty. But West sees his attempt drift wide. A 10 minutes to forget for the Magpies fly-half.
And referee Glen Jackson sounds his whistle drawing this tightly-fought encounter to a close. Golden opportunities squandered by both sides but the Magpies will definitely be ruing that interception in the final play of the half. The scoreline is certainly not a reflection of how close this match is and Magpies will be surely be looking to make amends of previous missed opportunities. All to play for here at Trafalgar Park so be sure to stay tuned for the second half in what should be a thrilling 40 mins of rugby!
What a turn of events! After a dominant passage of play from Hawke's Bay, they are awarded with a penalty on the Tasman 5m line. Ihaia West takes the quick tap in attempt to send Latu over but the ball is intercepted! Banks, quickest to react, intercepts the pass to run 95m to touch down for his side's 3rd try of the game. He fails to convert his own try in a pulled attempt at goal. The score is now 23-10.
Try for Tasman. After a clinical snipe down the left touchline, Tasman take full advantage of an unprepared Hawke's Bay defense in the subsequent play to send Liam Squire over in the corner. Banks misses the attempt at goal. Tasman now 18-10 in front.
