José Lima, known to many as Gonçalo Ataíde Amaral Pedroso de Lima, is a prominent figure in Portuguese rugby, renowned for his versatility as a centre or wing. Born in Coimbra on April 24, 1992, Lima has established himself as a key player both on the domestic and international rugby scenes.

Lima's club career has been a journey marked by dedication and excellence. He commenced his rugby journey with CR Évora before making a significant move to AEIS Agronomia, where he showcased his talent from 2010/11 to 2011/12. It was during this time that his skills caught the attention of RC Narbonne in the French Pro D2, and at just 20 years old, he embarked on a new chapter. Lima's tenure at RC Narbonne lasted from 2012/13 to 2013/14, during which he came tantalizingly close to achieving promotion to the coveted Top 14.

Undeterred by challenges, Lima continued to carve his path in French rugby, joining US Carcassonne for the following two seasons, from 2014/15 to 2015/16, still in the competitive Pro D2. His rugby journey led him to US Oyonnax in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, with a brief return to RC Narbonne in 2017/18. However, Lima found a more enduring home at US Carcassonne in 2018/19, where he has since made significant contributions to the team.

Lima's career faced a hurdle in January 2019 when he was suspended for doping, resulting in a one-year absence from the sport. However, his determination and commitment led to a triumphant return to competition in January 2020.

On the international stage, Lima has donned the Portuguese jersey with pride. His impressive 40 caps for Portugal, earned since his debut in 2010 at the tender age of 18, demonstrate his enduring commitment to representing his nation. Throughout his international career, Lima has notched up 5 tries, 1 conversion, and 3 penalties, amassing a total of 36 points. His first international appearance came in a closely contested match against the United States, and he has since become a stalwart for the national team.

As Portugal looks ahead to the World Rugby Cup 2023, José Lima's experience, versatility, and unwavering dedication will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the team's quest for success on the global rugby stage.
