Born in Dannevirke, New Zealand, Ward is a powerful hooker with an appetite for ball carrying. Having attended Otago Polytechnic, Ward went on to Massey University before taking up a career with Super Rugby side the Hurricanes in 2003. After two years in New Zealand rugby, Ward left to join London Wasps in the English premiership where he enjoyed 6 successful seasons. In 2011 he left Wasps to link up with Sale Sharks. Despite representing New Zealand at underage level, in 2009 Ward lined out for the England Saxons side.
