In 2009, Hanekom was included in the South Africa Under-20 team for the 2009 Junior World Championship.
He then moved to SWD Eagles for the 2012 Currie Cup First Division season, starting all fourteen games that season.
At the start of 2013, Hanekom joined the Lions and was included in their squad for the 2013 Lions Challenge Series, as well as the Golden Lions' 2013 Vodacom Cup squad.
Hanekom was selected as part of the Southern Kings' squad for the 2017 Super Rugby season.
