With over 50 caps for Countie Manukau and winning the 2010 player of the year, Piutau went on to represent the Chiefs & Highlanders in Super Rugby. He represented Tonga in the 2011 RWC, playing all four group games against Georgia, Namibia, Argentina and New Zealand.
In December 2016, the Tongan international captain signed a one-season deal with Bristol from Yamaha Jubilo.
After impressing since joining the club in January 2017, he signed a permanent deal with the Bears ahead of the 2018 the campaign,
He went into the 2018/19 season with 30 appearances for Bristol scoring 10 points.
As of March 2020 he has made 45 appearance for the English club and has scored 10 points.
